Abstract

Background: Emergency cesarean delivery often leads to significant anxiety in pregnant women. Mindfulness intervention can help reduce anxiety by enhancing present-moment awareness. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness intervention in reducing anxiety among mothers undergoing emergency cesarean delivery. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with purposive sampling was conducted on 20 pregnant women awaiting emergency cesarean delivery at hospitals in Sukoharjo and Surakarta, Indonesia. Respondents were divided into two groups: 10 in the intervention group and 10 in the control group. The mindfulness intervention included breathing techniques, body scanning, and present-moment awareness for 30 minutes per session. Anxiety was measured using the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and independent t-tests. Results: The intervention group showed a significant reduction in anxiety scores after the mindfulness intervention (Pre-test: 45.8 ± 6.2 vs. Post-test: 30.4 ± 4.8; p < 0.001), while the control group showed no significant difference. An independent t-test revealed a significant difference in post-test anxiety scores between the two groups (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Mindfulness intervention is effective in reducing anxiety among mothers undergoing emergency cesarean delivery. Mindfulness can be considered as a non-pharmacological intervention to reduce anxiety in pregnant women facing emergency delivery
